City colleges

These are schools which are not under the control of the local authority and which are partly funded by private finance. They are designed to provide general technology-based education. So far the schools that have opened have been richly proved with excellent buildings and resources, with colleges having been established in major urban areas and drawing from a whole ability range in limited catchment areas.

However, selecting from the whole ability range in deprived areas of cities turns them into selective establishments. They are all recognised by the department for education as independent - but not fee paying education.
