Grant maintained schools

Many state schools have opted out of the local government control and are becoming grant maintained. They are self-governing with funding drawn directly from the government. They are likely to be much sought after, as illustrated by a 40% increase in applications when the first twenty-two of these schools changed their status in 1989.

They tend to regard themselves as independent non-fee-paying institutions. If parents are interested in placing their children in a grant maintained school, they should make direct contact with the headmasters office not the local authority. Primary schools may now also seek grant maintained status.
