Examination boards and syllabuses
Currently the UK Education system is based around students achieving GCSEs (General Certificates of Secondary Education) and A Levels.
GCSEs
The single GCSE system superceded the dual pattern of GCE O levels and CSE. The plethora of examining boards was reduced to five regional organisations, although schools have freedom of choice to enter pupils for the examinations of boards outside their regions.
A levels
A levels are generally attained at a Higher Education level, and AS (advanced supplementary) levels feature in most schools. These AS levels require half the teaching and study time of A levels but hold equivalent academic rigour. They are intended to promote greater breadth of study although to date most students have selected AS levels which support their A levels, e.g. an extra science for scientists.
Vocational Qualifications
There are also a range of Vocational Qualifications available in a variety of subjects.
However
The education system in the UK is currently undergoing changes in its structure and will include choice of Diplomas which will be available in 17 different lines of learning at foundation, higher and advanced levels. The new system will give learners a wide choice of additional and specialist learning options to support progression, including new qualifications, GCSEs, A levels, apprenticeships and vocational qualifications suitable for 14 – 19 year olds. For more information and a timeline of changes to the education system please visit the Qualifications and Curriculum Authorities website.
